  18. =======
  19.     WinWisdom v4.1 consists of two programs for Windows 3.1.
  20. The first is a Quote-of-the-day program designed to display a 
  21. quote every time you start Windows.  The second program is
  22. the Reference/Editor program which can be used as a writers
  23. reference to search for quotes or it can be used to build and
  24. maintain your WinWisdom quotepacks.
  25.

  27. Registration
  28. ============
  29.     WinWisdom is shareware, it is NOT public domain.  The
  30. registration fee is $15 (US) with a free 15-day trial period.
  31. If you intend to use WinWisdom beyond the trial period, you must
  32. register by filling out the form in file REGISTER.TXT or providing
  33. the same information written on a sheet of paper and sending it
  34. along with your registration fee to:

  40. You may also register through CompuServe's Shareware Registration
  41. Database.  On CompuServe, type 'GO SWREG'.  The registration
  42. number for WinWisdom v4.1 is 2572.

  44. Remember to specify your disk size.
  45.  
  46. With your registration, you will receive the following:
  47.     1 - The registered version without the registration reminders.
  48.     2 - The most current version available.
  49.     3 - The full quote packs (with thousands of quotes (3600+)).
  50.     4 - A conversion program for converting quotepacks
  51.         from WinWisdom versions 3.0-3.2.
  52.  
  53. Remember, your registration supports shareware development.
  54. The ability to provide future releases depends on your support.

  56.  
  57. Installation
  58. ============
  59.     A Setup program is provided which will de-compress all of the
  60. files, install them to the appropriate directory, and create a
  61. Program Manager group.  Just run SETUP.EXE from your distribution
  62. diskettes or self-extracting archive and follow the prompts.
  63.  
  64.     In order to use the WinWisdom pop-up quote-of-the-day feature,
  65. you will need to do one of the following: 
  66.  
  67. Option 1: 
  68. 1.  Using any text editor (Notepad is good for this, SysEdit is
  69.     better), open the WIN.INI file in your Windows directory. 
  70. 2. Several lines down from the top of the file, you will find
  71.    a line which begins with 'RUN='.  This line tells Windows 
  72.    what programs to run after it boots.  Change this line to 
  73.    read:  RUN=WINWIS.EXE [plus any other startup programs]. 
  74. 3. Save the WIN.INI file.  The next time you start Windows,
  75.    WinWisdom will pop-up displaying your quote-of-the-day.

  77. Option 2: 
  78. 1. Open the group that you have designated as your start-up group
  79.    (by default, the group is 'StartUp'). 
  80. 2. From the File menu, select 'New', then select 'Program Item'. 
  81. 3. Type WinWisdom as the description (or any thing else you want
  82.    to call it) and type WINWIS.EXE as the command line. 
  83. 4. If you put WinWisdom in a directory other than the Windows
  84.    directory, you will need to type the directory in the working
  85.    directory field, and add the directory to the command line
  86.    field.

  89. Problems
  90. ========
  91.  
  92. Problem #1:  There have been a couple of reports of the
  93. setup program failing on MSAJT110.DL1.  If this happens to you,
  94. first try ending all other running Windows programs except Program
  95. Manager.  Then rerun setup from the File | Run menu of Program
  96. Manager.  If that doesn't work, all of the WinWisdom files can be
  97. decompressed with the DOS command EXPAND.  Extensions will be one
  98. of these: TXT, MSD, DLL, EXE, VBX, or HLP.  The exception is
  99. MSAJT110.DL1 and MSAJT110.DL2.  Combine those two files first using
  100. DOS command COPY MSAJT110.DL1 + MSAJT110.DL2 MSAJT110.DL_.  You
  101. can then expand MSAJT110.DL_ to MSAJT110.DLL.  When all of the
  102. files have been expanded, see README.TXT for the final file
  103. dispositions.  You can then setup a Program Manager group for all
  104. of the WinWisdom executables.
  105.  
  106. Problem #2:  If you have an older version of THREED.VBX in
  107. your WINDOWS or WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory, this setup program will
  108. fail.  A bug in Microsoft's setup software will not copy this file
  109. due to a change in file type.  To get around this problem move or
  110. rename the THREED.VBX that you already have then run SETUP.EXE
  111. again.  After the install completes, keep the most current
  112. THREED.VBX.
  113.  
  114. Problem #3:  Due to another bug in Microsoft's setup software
  115. this program might fail on file VER.DLL.  If it does, move or
  116. rename the VER.DLL that you already have then run SETUP.EXE
  117. again.  After the install completes, keep the most current VER.DLL.
  118.  
  119. Problem # 4:  If you are installing this version of WinWisdom
  120. on a system which has a previous release of WinWisdom on it,
  121. you will get a file error when you execute either of the 
  122. WinWisdom programs.  This release uses a completely new database
  123. which is incompatable with the old database.  Since the WINWIS.INI
  124. file used by your old version points to an old file, the new
  125. programs will not recognize the old files as WinWisdom files.
  126. When you receive the file error, just use 'Open' or 'Select file
  127. to use' from the 'File' menu to select one of the new files.
  128. You can prevent this problem from happening by deleting WINWIS.INI
  129. PRIOR to installing the new version.  Registered users will receive
  130. a conversion program which will convert the old file format into
  131. the new file format.  See REGISTER.TXT for information on how to
  132. register WinWisdom.

  135. Distribution
  136. ============
  137.     I retain the copyright on all versions.  You may distribute
  138. any version as long as you include this document with all
  139. of the original files and distribute the software unmodified, 
  140. free of charge (except for reasonable distribution fees), and
  141. without additional restrictions.  Vendors, please see VENDOR.TXT
  142. for important notes regarding distribution diskette creation.
