General
=======
WinWisdom v4.1 consists of two programs for Windows 3.1.
The first is a Quote-of-the-day program designed to display a
quote every time you start Windows. The second program is
the Reference/Editor program which can be used as a writers
reference to search for quotes or it can be used to build and
maintain your WinWisdom quotepacks.
Registration
============
WinWisdom is shareware, it is NOT public domain. The
registration fee is $15 (US) with a free 15-day trial period.
If you intend to use WinWisdom beyond the trial period, you must
register by filling out the form in file REGISTER.TXT or providing
the same information written on a sheet of paper and sending it
along with your registration fee to:
Richard Pitts
P.O. Box 963
Alpharetta, GA 30239
You may also register through CompuServe's Shareware Registration
Database. On CompuServe, type 'GO SWREG'. The registration
number for WinWisdom v4.1 is 2572.
Remember to specify your disk size.
With your registration, you will receive the following:
1 - The registered version without the registration reminders.
2 - The most current version available.
3 - The full quote packs (with thousands of quotes (3600+)).
4 - A conversion program for converting quotepacks
from WinWisdom versions 3.0-3.2.
Remember, your registration supports shareware development.
The ability to provide future releases depends on your support.
Installation
============
A Setup program is provided which will de-compress all of the
files, install them to the appropriate directory, and create a
Program Manager group. Just run SETUP.EXE from your distribution
diskettes or self-extracting archive and follow the prompts.
In order to use the WinWisdom pop-up quote-of-the-day feature,
you will need to do one of the following:
Option 1:
1. Using any text editor (Notepad is good for this, SysEdit is
better), open the WIN.INI file in your Windows directory.
2. Several lines down from the top of the file, you will find
a line which begins with 'RUN='. This line tells Windows
what programs to run after it boots. Change this line to
read: RUN=WINWIS.EXE [plus any other startup programs].
3. Save the WIN.INI file. The next time you start Windows,
WinWisdom will pop-up displaying your quote-of-the-day.
Option 2:
1. Open the group that you have designated as your start-up group
(by default, the group is 'StartUp').
2. From the File menu, select 'New', then select 'Program Item'.
3. Type WinWisdom as the description (or any thing else you want
to call it) and type WINWIS.EXE as the command line.
4. If you put WinWisdom in a directory other than the Windows
directory, you will need to type the directory in the working
directory field, and add the directory to the command line
field.
Problems
========
Problem #1: There have been a couple of reports of the
setup program failing on MSAJT110.DL1. If this happens to you,
first try ending all other running Windows programs except Program
Manager. Then rerun setup from the File | Run menu of Program
Manager. If that doesn't work, all of the WinWisdom files can be
decompressed with the DOS command EXPAND. Extensions will be one
of these: TXT, MSD, DLL, EXE, VBX, or HLP. The exception is
MSAJT110.DL1 and MSAJT110.DL2. Combine those two files first using
DOS command COPY MSAJT110.DL1 + MSAJT110.DL2 MSAJT110.DL_. You
can then expand MSAJT110.DL_ to MSAJT110.DLL. When all of the
files have been expanded, see README.TXT for the final file
dispositions. You can then setup a Program Manager group for all
of the WinWisdom executables.
Problem #2: If you have an older version of THREED.VBX in
your WINDOWS or WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory, this setup program will
fail. A bug in Microsoft's setup software will not copy this file
due to a change in file type. To get around this problem move or
rename the THREED.VBX that you already have then run SETUP.EXE
again. After the install completes, keep the most current
THREED.VBX.
Problem #3: Due to another bug in Microsoft's setup software
this program might fail on file VER.DLL. If it does, move or
rename the VER.DLL that you already have then run SETUP.EXE
again. After the install completes, keep the most current VER.DLL.
Problem # 4: If you are installing this version of WinWisdom
on a system which has a previous release of WinWisdom on it,
you will get a file error when you execute either of the
WinWisdom programs. This release uses a completely new database
which is incompatable with the old database. Since the WINWIS.INI
file used by your old version points to an old file, the new
programs will not recognize the old files as WinWisdom files.
When you receive the file error, just use 'Open' or 'Select file
to use' from the 'File' menu to select one of the new files.
You can prevent this problem from happening by deleting WINWIS.INI
PRIOR to installing the new version. Registered users will receive
a conversion program which will convert the old file format into
the new file format. See REGISTER.TXT for information on how to
register WinWisdom.

any version as long as you include this document with all
